Winter Begins

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

About three inches of snow accumulated overnight at my house and yesterday’s neglected errands forced me into town today; a little less snow fell there.  The standard exchange:

“Good morning.”
“Morning.”
“How ‘bout that snow?  Sure surprised me when I got up this morning.”
“Yeah, I’d hoped we’d get to October this year before it came.”

Conversation at the gas station, and grocery check out line, and video store, and…
Just when we were running out of small talk in Fairbanks (There’s only so much you can say about Caribou Barbie) winter has arrived.  The weather is interesting again.  Sunshine made most of the snow disappear this afternoon, but it’ll be back.  It always comes back.

PNBA Fall Trade Show

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

The PNBA Fall Trade Show was uberfun.  Started out crappy but I blame that on the redeye flight and no sleep for 36 hours.  I was exhausted and didn’t know anybody.  By four pm I was upset that I had left the laptop at home because I was ready to just sit in my hotel room for the next three days and write.  Things got better that night with the nightcapper author party and the following morning at breakfast I met some nice people.

I went to a few educational sessions but forgot everything when I walked onto the trade show floor and was surrounded by FREE BOOKS!  Two words with a special place in my heart, free books, free books, free books.  Leaving the laptop at home was a good thing because I was able to snag even more free books!

I finished two and a half juvenile/young adult novels on the flight home.  Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go by Dale E Basye is a clever and fun story about a brother and sister who die in a freak marshmallow accident.  Word Nerd by Susin Nielsen is a touching story about a fatherless young boy finding his place in the world in the midst of competitive Scrabble and a overprotective mom.  I’m about halfway through The Fetch by Laura Whitcomb and it’s very promising, I’m intrigued by the story.  It involves the Romanovs and a Fetch, a spirit who guides souls into the underworld.  All this reminds me that I need to get my Goodreads list updated.  (Yet another thing to add to my endless things-to-do list.)

I met a lot of great writers, tried convincing them to come to Gulliver’s for a signing…who wants to come to Fairbanks?  Fabulous PNBA volunteers and friendly booksellers made me feel welcome my first time at the PNBA trade show and I’m hoping David & Maria let me go again next year.

Launch

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Launched the site a few weeks ago, it could use some work.  My parents visited and stayed at the house for about two weeks.  It took me some time to recover, and then I started my new schedule at Gulliver’s.  Not certain what possessed me to start a six am to two pm workday but it’s interesting.  The going to bed at nine pm is a little hard so I haven’t been getting my full eight hours.  I’ve become an earlybird four decades before my time.  But my afternoons have been productive.  And now I’m off to the PNBA fall trade show.  Already dreaming about all the free books and trying to figure out how to fit them all in my suitcase.
